Viking Ranges: What We Check First

Viking's dual-fuel ranges combine the brand's heavy gas burners with an electric oven, and they are a favorite for serious home bakers. Many 5 Series and 7 Series models use TruConvec, which places a third heating element around the convection fan for more even heat, and larger 48-inch and 60-inch ranges add a second oven along with a griddle, grill or both. Controls range from knobs with a mechanical thermostat on older models to electronic controls with temperature sensors on newer ones.

  • Bake or TruConvec element burning out with visible blistering
  • Convection fan motor grinding or stopping during baking
  • Electronic oven control or sensor failing after storm surges
  • Griddle thermostat failure on larger dual-fuel ranges

The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our Viking range repair guide.

Two systems in one appliance

A range is a cooktop and an oven sharing one frame, so a dead bake element or a weak oven igniter does not mean the burners are failing too. On older Lancaster ranges, the typical repairs are elements, igniters, thermostats, infinite switches and oven door gaskets. Those parts are usually available, which makes repair a sensible choice when the rest of the range is sound.

When we pull a range out in an older home, we also look at the cord, the receptacle and the gas or propane flex line behind it. If something there should be replaced by an electrician or plumber, we tell you before we push the range back. We also check for an anti-tip bracket, which many older installs never had.

After storms and on route days

Newer ranges with electronic controls can be upset by the surge when rural power returns; switch the breaker off and on before calling. Lancaster visits may be grouped into route days, and the technician gives you the cause and the price before starting.
