Should I repair or replace my Avanti countertop microwave?

For door switches, fuses and turntable motors, repair can make sense. For magnetron or control failures, a new countertop unit often costs about the same. We give you the numbers before you decide.

Is it worth repairing my over-the-range microwave in Locust?

Often, especially if the failure is a door switch, fuse or fan. A failed magnetron on an older unit can approach the cost of replacement, and we will say so. You get the price before deciding.

My microwave in Stanfield runs but does not heat. Can I fix it myself?

Please do not open it. The high-voltage parts inside are dangerous even when unplugged. A technician can test it safely, or replacement may be the better value for a countertop model.

Avanti Microwaves: What We Check First

Avanti microwaves are mostly compact countertop models, with some over-the-range units, built for apartments, offices and small kitchens. They use the standard microwave design: a magnetron powered by a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a turntable, and a set of door interlock switches that cut power when the door opens. Their compact size and low price make them popular, but also make the repair decision tight.

Door interlock switch failure blowing the internal fuse
Magnetron or high-voltage diode failure leaving food cold
Burned waveguide cover causing arcing inside the cavity
Turntable motor or coupler failure stopping rotation

The full explanation, including what you can safely check yourself and when repair beats replacement, is in our Avanti microwave repair guide.

When a microwave repair makes sense out here

Given the drive to western Stanly County, a visit for a countertop microwave rarely makes sense, and we will tell you so on the phone. Over-the-range models are different, since they also serve as the range hood and light and require removal and installation to replace. Common faults include door switches, blown internal fuses, failed magnetrons and vent fans that wear out.

Try the breaker, unplug the unit for a minute, and test with a cup of water. Clean the grease filters underneath. Do not open the cabinet, because the high-voltage capacitor can hold a charge after unplugging. If we come out, we test the parts, give you the price and schedule on a route day when possible. Built-in units in newer Locust kitchens are the ones most often worth that trip.
