Why are there sparks inside my Roper microwave?

Sparks often come from a burned or greasy waveguide cover on the cavity wall, chipped interior paint, or metal left inside. Stop using it until the cause is found. Replacing the cover is an inexpensive repair if the magnetron has not been damaged.

Is it worth repairing my over-the-range microwave in Locust?

Often, especially if the failure is a door switch, fuse or fan. A failed magnetron on an older unit can approach the cost of replacement, and we will say so. You get the price before deciding.

My microwave in Stanfield runs but does not heat. Can I fix it myself?

Roper Microwaves: What We Check First

Roper has never been a big name in microwaves, and you will not find many Roper-badged units in local kitchens. When one does turn up, it is a Whirlpool-sourced countertop or over-the-range model with the same basic layout as other budget microwaves: a magnetron, a high-voltage transformer, capacitor and diode, a set of door interlock switches, a turntable motor and, on over-the-range units, a vent fan and light. Many Roper kitchens actually have a microwave from a different brand, and we repair those too.

When a microwave repair makes sense out here

Given the drive to western Stanly County, a visit for a countertop microwave rarely makes sense, and we will tell you so on the phone. Over-the-range models are different, since they also serve as the range hood and light and require removal and installation to replace. Common faults include door switches, blown internal fuses, failed magnetrons and vent fans that wear out.

Try the breaker, unplug the unit for a minute, and test with a cup of water. Clean the grease filters underneath. Do not open the cabinet, because the high-voltage capacitor can hold a charge after unplugging. If we come out, we test the parts, give you the price and schedule on a route day when possible. Built-in units in newer Locust kitchens are the ones most often worth that trip.
