Why does my Whirlpool coil burner only work when I press it down?

That is a classic sign of a burned or loose receptacle, where the element's terminals no longer make solid contact. Continuing to use it can damage the element and the wiring. Replacing the receptacle and often the element solves it.

Gas cooktops use sealed burners with spark electrodes powered by a spark module and controlled by switches on each valve. Radiant cooktops use ribbon elements under the glass, controlled by infinite switches or touch controls. Coil cooktops, still common in rentals and older homes, use plug-in elements that sit in receptacles under each drip pan.

Counter-Mounted Cooktops in Remodeled Kitchens

Separate cooktops are less common here than in the big subdivisions to the west, but plenty of Monroe kitchens were remodeled with one, and newer homes around town sometimes have them too.
