A yellow or uneven flame usually means a misaligned burner cap or clogged burner ports, or sometimes a dirty burner head. Let the stove cool, clean the parts and reseat the cap. If the flame remains yellow or smells unusual, stop using it and have it inspected.

Coil burners, glass tops and gas

Coil-element stoves remain common in the older homes and rentals around town, and they are among the easiest appliances to keep running. A burner that sparks, heats only on one setting or does not heat at all usually needs a new element, receptacle or switch. Glass-top stoves in newer homes are prone to element and limiter faults, and gas stoves need clean, dry igniters to light.

With the stove off and cool, try moving a non-working coil element to a working position. If it heats there, the element is fine and the receptacle or switch is suspect. On a gas stove, check that caps are seated and the ports are clear. Smell gas? Leave the house and call the gas utility.
