My Electrolux gas stove's oven igniter glows but there is no flame. Why?

That is a classic sign of a weak igniter. It still glows but doesn't pull enough current to open the oven gas valve. Replacing the igniter usually fixes it, but we test the valve as well to be sure.

The receptacle under one burner on my Lancaster stove looks burned. Can I keep using it?

No. Stop using that burner, because a damaged receptacle can overheat and harm the wiring. We can replace the receptacle and element and check the switch, and we quote the work first.

Our stove came from a house on natural gas, and our Lancaster farmhouse runs on propane. What do we need?

The stove needs a propane conversion, which changes the orifices and the regulator setting. Running it unconverted produces oversized, sooty flames. Stop using it and have the conversion done before cooking on it.

Keeping a long-serving stove cooking

Electric coil stoves in Lancaster's older homes tend to fail in predictable ways. A coil that stays cold may be burned out, the receptacle under it may be scorched or loose, or the infinite switch behind the knob may be worn. Turn the stove off, let it cool and reseat the coil firmly. If the receptacle looks melted or blackened, leave that burner off until it is replaced.

Gas and propane stoves fail differently. A burner that will not light usually has food or water in its ports or cap after a boil-over; remove the grate and cap, clear the ports with a pin and let everything dry. A stove moved from a natural gas home to a propane property must be converted, or it will burn with tall, yellow flames.
