Kenmore Cooktops: What We Check First
Kenmore sold drop-in cooktops in gas, electric radiant and, more recently, induction versions. Many were built by Frigidaire, while some Elite models came from Whirlpool or other makers. Gas models use sealed burners with spark ignition. Radiant models use elements under ceramic glass with knob or touch controls. Induction models use magnetic coils and power boards, with a cooling fan underneath. Some older Kenmore cooktops combined gas burners with a downdraft vent or a modular grill section, which adds its own parts.

Gas Burners in Larger Kitchens, Glass Tops in Remodels

The usual trouble is constant clicking after a spill, a burner that will not light or a flame that burns low and uneven. Before checking anything, turn off the breaker that feeds the cooktop. On a gas model, never loosen fittings or touch the supply line behind it. If you smell gas at any point, leave the house right away and call the gas utility or 911 from outside.
Simple Fixes First, Then Diagnosis
On a gas cooktop, let the burner caps dry fully after cleaning and make sure each cap sits flat on its base; misaligned caps cause much of the clicking and weak flame we hear about. If that does not solve it, we test the igniters, spark module and valves.
