Why does the top of my Roper agitator spin freely?

On older direct-drive Roper washers, the agitator dogs inside the top section wear out and stop gripping. The bottom of the agitator still moves, but the top freewheels and clothes do not roll over properly. Replacing the dogs is a quick, inexpensive repair.

My Clover washer leaves rust stains on white clothes. Is the washer rusting?

Usually not. Iron in well water often causes those stains. Check the drum for chipped spots, and if it is intact, a water filter or treatment is the likely fix rather than a washer repair.

Our Lake Wylie front-loader smells after sitting closed for a few weeks. Can that be fixed?

In many cases, yes. Cleaning the door boot, the dispenser and the drain pump filter, then running a cleaning cycle, removes most odors. If mildew has damaged the boot, we can replace it.

Roper Washers: What We Check First

There are two generations of Roper top-loaders in local homes. Older machines use Whirlpool's direct-drive design, where a reversible motor connects to the transmission through a plastic-and-rubber coupler and the pump bolts to the motor. Newer Roper washers use a low-profile Whirlpool platform with a belt-driven gearcase, an electronic shift mechanism and a lid that locks during spin. Knowing which one you have narrows the diagnosis immediately.

Well water and slow fills around Clover

On properties with private wells outside Clover, sediment and iron reach the washer's inlet valve, where small mesh screens catch them. Over time those screens clog and the machine fills slowly, stalls or throws a fill error. Iron can also leave rust-colored spots on light loads, which is a water condition rather than a washer fault.

To check the screens, turn off both supply valves, unscrew the hoses at the back of the washer and look inside the inlet ports. If they are packed with grit, they can be rinsed carefully. If the valve itself is damaged, it should be replaced.
